National CleanUp Day 2018

Our Story

One day. One planet. One goal. Millions of people in 150 countries uniting to clean up our world, in the biggest civic action in human history.

On 15 September, volunteers and partners worldwide will come together to rid our planet of trash – cleaning up litter and mismanaged waste from our beaches, rivers, forests, and streets.

A powerful ‘green wave’ of cleanups will start in New Zealand and end 36 hours later in Hawaii, with millions of people working towards one goal: a clean and healthy planet.

World Cleanup Day harnesses the power of everyday people to achieve incredible things by joining together. Its beauty lies in cooperation and collaboration: building bridges between disparate communities, and including all levels of society – from citizens, to business, to government.

A world changing idea with a humble beginning. The movement was born 10 years ago in Estonia, when 4% of the population came out to clean the entire country of illegally dumped waste, in a matter of hours. This captured the imaginations of people worldwide, who were inspired to follow suit with the same ambitious ‘one country, one day’ formula.

This was the beginning of a global bottom-up civic movement, Let’s Do It! World, which has spread like wildfire around the globe. The movement has grown to be the biggest of its kind in the world – uniting people from all corners of the planet to work together in cleaning the world of trash.

But, the Let’s Do It! movement has never been purely about cleaning up trash. It also works to raise global awareness and implement lasting changes to end the global waste epidemic, once and for all.

As Estonia celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, World Cleanup Day 2018 is the country’s gift to the world.

How the movement works

The most important part of the World Cleanup Day Movement is the vast network of local cleanup teams. 130+ ambitious and inspired team leaders will engage millions of volunteers in their respective countries to clean up the waste.

Supporting this network is the Let’s Do It Foundation – an organisation with a decade of experience in supporting and facilitating cleanups worldwide. An International Steering Committee sits alongside the country teams, ensuring that the views and goals of the local teams are understood by the supporting organisation.

A numbers of key strategic partners work alongside Let’s Do It! Foundation to support local cleanup teams. The network of country teams is also supported by six core and six support teams, who are based in Tallinn, Estonia.

For a clean Future

People world-wide want to change the global waste situation. For us, World Cleanup Day is the beginning of a much wider process. So, we’re working on two big projects with more long-term impacts too – the Keep It Clean Plan, and the World Waste Platform.

Want to help the global movement?

  • What can we do after World Cleanup Day?
  • How can we ensure that we keep the planet clean?
  • What should be done with litter once collected?
  • What are the next most important steps?
  • How do we move towards our goal: minimising the leakage of resources from circular economy models?

The plan. What and why?

The Keep It Clean Plan is a set of guidelines which tackles exactly these questions. It will state our overall principles and our vision for the management of resources and waste, together with step-by-step solutions and examples of best practice. It will act as a general support document for all communities wanting to improve their waste situation, and who are willing to develop their own local/national/regional strategy.

* Trash blindness – a situation in which a society or its individual members are either:

  • so used to their current waste pollution problem that they do not even notice it;
  • consciously choosing not to recognise waste pollution, and/or the possible consequences of it, as a problem.

World Waste Platform

We are building a central database of mismanaged waste and litter in the world. Currently this gathers information from eight different waste apps, including our own World Cleanup Day app. The aim is to make the waste problem visible to the world – showing just how much waste is where it shouldn’t be. We are working to collect enough data to predict where there might be waste, even before it has been mapped. The data could also help answer questions such as where litter is coming from, and who is responsible for it (companies, local governments, etc.) – to help inform strategists and policy makers.

With this visually-presented information we can move towards improving the situation – using it to demand better waste policies from our governments. Plus, it will help fight the ‘trash blindness’* which has become a global phenomenon.

We are also compiling a World Waste Index, which will identify how waste management systems perform in each country, taking into account each country’s level of resource recovery from waste, and their situation in terms of mismanaged waste.

More information about the platform and index can be found here:
